You're the expert in your experience.
I tell people all the time, I don't even know your middle name, so I can't tell you what to do. But I'll sure as hell listen to you and see what my experience can bring to you.
I'm mostly Milton Ericksonian in style, where you do much of the talking and I watch for cues. I'm perfectly comfortable with periods of silence - much of the brain work gets done during that time. I'll give you an example: You finish a long tirade about your boss, you're nearly panting and you fall into silence and stare at the floor. After a minute, you look at me and say, "When I was in third grade, my mom used to ...". Why would I interfere? Obviously your brain is working on something.
I don't need to look smart by becoming all academic and tell you theories. You may not need to know how the lock works, you may not even want the key, you just want to get through the door.
